“My jeans are by far the most definitive garment in my wardrobe. My taste in jeans has evolved dramatically over the last four years, as have I. A few years ago I would wear a loose fitting, size 38 pair from Levi’s. After making a few changes in my lifestyle, I lost a dramatic amount of weight, eventually moving to a size 30. In that transitional period, I came by a great pair of black skinny jeans from Lee Cooper, at size 34.
These are the first skinny jeans that I acquired. With a 4% Lycra in them, they clung on for dear life, slimming down my silhouette dramatically. With a slight acid wash, and a bright yellow top stitch on the rear pockets, it lent a playful rock-n-roll look to any tee shirt or shirt it was paired with. Its colour gave it a lot of versatility, and being one of the few men in Mumbai able to pull off these jeans was an empowering feeling.
Eventually, I outgrew these jeans, shrinking two sizes down to size 30. Refusing to give them up, I went to my tailor, ready to alter them down to size. It then occurred to me to retain some of the newly acquired slouchy-ness along the crotch and thighs while tapering the rest of the pants to make them skinny; I merely altered the waistline and the calf section and turned them into denim Jodhpur pants! If it was an old t-shirt, I would have probably thrown it away…but jeans somehow hold a much larger sway over me…there’s definitely a more intense emotional connection. And the way I see it is that I’m not ready to give up this particular pair…neither now, nor anywhere in the near future.”
